For many couples visiting Japan, capturing wedding or pre-wedding photos in Tokyo is at the top of their travel wish list. And what better backdrop than Tokyo Tower, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks? Combined with the elegance of traditional kimono, this location offers the perfect balance of Japanese culture and modern cityscape.
In this article, we’ll share the story of a recent photoshoot around Tokyo Tower — including rainy-day photography at Zojoji Temple, strolling with traditional Japanese umbrellas, and tips on kimono rental in Tokyo.
Starting at Zojoji Temple: History Meets Romance

Our session began at Zojoji Temple, located right next to Tokyo Tower. With over 600 years of history, Zojoji is one of the most impressive temples in Tokyo and a perfect setting for kimono photos.
On this particular day, the weather wasn’t on our side. Rain poured down, but the grand temple gate provided shelter and became a beautiful backdrop on its own. The massive wooden architecture, combined with the couple’s traditional attire, gave the photos a timeless atmosphere — almost as if we had stepped back in time.
Embracing the Rain with Japanese Umbrellas

As the rain lightened, we moved to a small park on a hill overlooking Tokyo Tower. The drizzle continued, but rather than stopping the session, we embraced it with traditional Japanese umbrellas (wagasa).
Though made from paper, wagasa are sturdy enough to handle light rain and add a uniquely Japanese touch to any photo. The soft reflections from the wet ground, the muted city skyline, and the red umbrella created a romantic and cinematic feel.
Why Choose Kimono for Your Tokyo Photos

The couple chose to wear kimono, Japan’s most iconic traditional attire. For international couples, kimono is not just clothing — it’s an unforgettable experience that transforms a photoshoot into something truly special.
If you’re considering a pre-wedding photoshoot in Tokyo, wearing kimono is highly recommended. It connects you with Japan’s heritage and pairs beautifully with landmarks like Tokyo Tower, temples, and traditional gardens.
Luckily, Asakusa is home to more than 30 kimono rental shops, ranging from budget-friendly to luxury boutiques offering high-quality silk kimono. Choosing can feel overwhelming, but we work closely with our couples and recommend trusted rental shops that match your style and budget. We also assist with logistics, including transport to the photoshoot location.
