From Embassy to Tokyo Tower: A Romantic Elopement in the Heart of Japan

Last week, we had the honor of photographing a truly special wedding: a civil ceremony at the French Embassy in Tokyo, for a couple from France who chose Japan as the place to officially begin their married life.

As photographers specializing in Tokyo elopements and international weddings, we’ve visited many embassies in the past. But the French Embassy stands out with its exceptional grandeur and atmosphere—unsurprising, perhaps, given France’s global stature.

Located in the heart of Tokyo, the French Embassy feels like a hidden sanctuary. Surrounded by deep greenery, the five-story building is tucked into a forest-like landscape that makes you forget you’re in the center of one of the world’s busiest cities. Their intimate ceremony took place in a beautifully appointed room inside the embassy, rich in natural light and classic Parisian charm.

A Civil Wedding Ceremony with Family from France

This was a civil wedding, conducted and officiated by the embassy staff, following the French legal format. It was deeply personal and filled with emotion, especially as both sets of parents had flown in all the way from France to serve as witnesses for the couple.

The atmosphere was warm and celebratory, with heartfelt vows and quiet moments of connection between generations. For international couples seeking to legally marry in Japan while also enjoying a unique cultural experience, embassies like this one offer a meaningful alternative to traditional ceremonies.

Capturing Iconic Tokyo After the Ceremony

After the ceremony, the couple wanted to explore more of Tokyo and capture a second chapter of their wedding day—one filled with iconic views and a sense of timeless Japanese charm.

We recommended several options, and they chose Shiba Park, a lush public space located just beneath the soaring Tokyo Tower. There’s perhaps no better place for a mix of urban energy and open green space in Tokyo. With Tokyo Tower in the background, their portraits gained a cinematic, unmistakably "Tokyo" flavor.

Golden Hour at Zojoji Temple

As the sun began to set, we walked over to Zojoji Temple, a historic landmark right next to the park. This centuries-old Buddhist temple offers stunning views of Tokyo Tower rising behind its traditional wooden gates. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect—the golden hour light filtered dramatically through the buildings, casting a warm glow over the couple as we captured their final portraits of the day.
