Surrounded by autumn colors and Mount Fuji’s dramatic skyline

In the fall of 2024, we received a special inquiry from a couple traveling from Denver, Colorado.

The plan?

He wanted to propose to his girlfriend of five years during their trip to Japan—surrounded by the autumn leaves of Lake Kawaguchiko, with Mount Fuji as the witness.

Of course, she had no idea.

She thought it was just a casual couple photo session to commemorate their trip. We started off the shoot with that in mind—keeping things relaxed and natural.

The fall foliage around Kawaguchiko was at its peak, and while the famous "Momiji Corridor" was packed with tourists, we know from experience (over a decade of photographing in this area!) that there are hidden spots locals love, where the colors are just as beautiful—and far more peaceful.

So instead of fighting the crowds, we took them to one of those lesser-known locations to enjoy the scenery and capture quiet, intimate moments.

Kawaguchiko’s most iconic locations—Oishi Park

Next, we headed to one of Kawaguchiko’s most iconic locations—Oishi Park.

(Okay, maybe it’s technically the second most popular… since Arakurayama Sengen Park probably holds the top spot, haha.)

Still, when people think of Kawaguchiko, this is the place that comes to mind.

The couple had it on their must-visit list, so naturally, we planned to shoot there too.

But again—so many people!

We had originally considered this spot for the proposal, but both of them are on the shy side and weren’t thrilled by the idea of being watched by dozens of strangers.

Plus, Mount Fuji was still hidden behind thick clouds.

So instead, we focused on portraits that worked without Fuji in the background—images that simply captured their connection and the beauty of autumn.

After that, the proposal was supposed to wrap things up.

But just then, the sky began to clear… and finally, Mount Fuji came into view.

We couldn’t miss the opportunity.

We took them to a quiet spot with a panoramic view of the lake and the mountain—far from the crowds. When everything was ready, I gave the secret signal to him.

He pulled the ring from his pocket, got down on one knee, and asked her the big question.

Her reaction? A mix of joy, shock, and pure emotion.

I stayed back quietly, capturing every moment through my lens.

Afterward, as we packed up, the couple mentioned they’d love to celebrate with a drink somewhere they could enjoy the sunset and view of Mount Fuji.

We found a cozy-looking bar via Google Maps and drove there—but it turned out to be closed!

Still, the view from the spot was breathtaking.

With the golden light of sunset illuminating the mountain and lake, we captured one last, truly unforgettable shot—perhaps the most dramatic photo of the day.
